Our Story

Starting a new church during a global pandemic was certainly not our initial plan!

In July 2019, a small group of Christians took a leap of faith, deciding to start a new church in Colchester. They began meeting as a launch team of 8 adults and 2 children, gathering weekly for prayer and planning. After a visit from Anglican Mission in England (AMiE) in autumn 2019, John was accepted as an AMiE Pioneer Minister and by summer 2020 he had become self-employed through a Stewardship Church Planter account.

When the pandemic arrived, the team had to adapt. Cornerstone Church Colchester officially launched with online services in autumn 2020, transitioning to outdoor garden services as restrictions eased. The church had grown to 16 adults by this point, reminding us that church isn't a building but a people.

As the church continued to grow, we moved to meeting indoors in autumn 2021 before finding a welcoming home in the Rovers Tye pub every Sunday morning a year later. The milestones continued in 2023. CIO status was granted, making us a registered charity and Cornerstone Church Colchester became the 25th official AMiE church.

By 2025, the church had grown to 30 members with around 50 joining together each Sunday. This meant we were financially able to employ John but also meant that space at the pub was becoming tight. So after 3 happy years meeting at the Rovers Tye, in August 2025, we moved to a new venue for our Sunday morning services - Queen Boudica Primary School.

Our Faith

None of us at Cornerstone Church have life sorted -  to be honest we are people who mess things up regularly! But we have all discovered that God can be known through Jesus. He offers us life, hope, forgiveness and eternal love.

Meet The Church Council

At Cornerstone we value relational Biblical leadership, and encourage anyone in the church community to bring thoughts and ideas to the leadership team.

In any leadership meeting, we hear from God’s Word and then aim to put this into action through genuine and authentic relational discussions as we work together to bring God glory and see him working through the church.

The day-to-day running of the church is led by the Church Council.
